Self-tanning products and certain sunscreens (especially Riemann P20) can stain the pool liner and linen. What makes this even more tricky is that the stains often only appear after laundering. Having recently invested in a new liner, may we make two requests:
As our bathroom towels are white, we ask that you do not use them outside. We provide long coloured towels to cover and protect the sun lounger cushions. Please bring your own towels for pool and beach use.
Some beachside tavernas are cash only, but almost all restaurants take cards. A few UK banks do not charge for cash withdrawals from ATMs in Europe. Another option is Revolut combination app and card (useful for worldwide travel spending and currency transfers at the Interbank rate). Please use the villa safe to keep your cash secure.
The beach has sand and pebbles, so it's worth packing beach shoes or flip flops. Also available locally.
You can charge from USB ports on the villa laptop (remember your leads), or the new USB wall sockets (living room and master bedroom). Airport security may require you to be able to switch devices on.
The most effective mosquito sprays contain the strong chemical DEET. Please spray carefully as rather scarily this can melt plastic and nail varnish! Online reviews are positive about the environmentally friendly citronella-based Avon Skin-So-Soft Dry Oil Spray. Alternatively adding a few drops of neem and citronella essential oils to your usual body lotion creates a fragrance that can work well. The upstairs fly screens allow you to keep the bedrooms insect-free while allowing the breeze through.
Although our first aid kit contains plasters and antiseptic, we do not supply medications. There is a pharmacy near Papantoniou, plus two private medical centres with 24h on-call doctors in case of emergencies. Further information.
While the European Health Insurance Card allows you to have free state emergency treatment, we strongly advise that you take out travel insurance to enable you to use the local private medical facilities in the village (rather than the state hospitals in Paphos or Limassol).
We are happy to help with car hire suggestions for airport or local pickup - just ask. From June 8 2015, if you have a UK photocard driving licence, the paper counterpart is no longer valid. Under the new system you have to obtain a code which enables your licence details to be shared with your car rental company. Each code is valid for 21 days. To log on, you need your driving licence and national insurance numbers, plus postcode. More details.
If you are likely to opt for car hire excess insurance, it is much cheaper to buy before you travel, rather than at the desk. You may find the MoneyMaxim comparison tool useful.
Hopefully the website gives you a good idea about the villa facilities and appliances. If you're looking for more specific information, (for example kitchen equipment, or what consumables are provided), we have compiled a comprehensive villa inventory. Please be aware this is provided for guidance only, as from time to time items break or go missing. We do our utmost to keep this list current, but are reliant on guests to notify us or our Cyprus manager if there are problems with anything during their stay.
Before leaving the UK, you can download BBC iPlayer and All4 programmes via WiFi to watch on the journey. You can stream live UK TV to a tablet or phone (and record 1 h free) via the FilmOn app. There are plenty of apps allowing texting and voice or video calling over WiFi... FaceTime, Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, etc.
easyJet now allow you to use gadgets in flight mode for takeoff and landing too.
If visiting in autumn or spring, we suggest including a few warmer items as it can get chilly after sunset.
In the baggage hall, check out the Tourist Information desk - there are good free maps, along with a multitude of leaflets for attractions and events.
You can speed things up by sending a driver ahead to sort out the car hire paperwork whilst others wait for the luggage - ensure the driver takes the documents as they are not allowed back into the baggage hall.
Both Larnaca and Paphos airports have free WiFi from MTN and Cyta.
Cyprus maps can be an expensive add-on to sat navs, however navigation is straightforward as there aren't many roads. It is more tricky in built up areas...
You can download Google maps onto a smartphone or tablet over WiFi, then use GPS to track your location on the map without using costly mobile data. (Select a map area > Search > Make this map area available offline). Saved areas are automatically cleared after 30 days.
Windows / Android / iOS app allowing you to download Nokia's complete Cyprus map. (Menu > Europe > Cyprus). This provides complete offline sat nav with turn-by-turn directions. Tip: In 'Settings' choose 'SD storage' before downloading the map.
